Power Outage: Scott Avett

Hexton Gallery is pleased to present Power Outage, a new exhibition by artist and musician Scott Avett. This was the first exhibition of the artist’s work since January 2020.
The exhibition’s namesake painting, Power Outage, captures the intimacy and vulnerability of the artist’s pandemic experience, spent mostly with his family on their North Carolina farm. Avett depicts two children huddled around the glow of a warm candle during an evening of lost power. The darkness that surrounds the edges gives way to the burning light source at the painting’s center, pulling the children into the center with it. Much like the pandemic itself, the candle and the notion of a power outage brings with it a sense of uneasiness while at the same time projecting warmth and the quiet opportunity of a moment when the world has stopped.
